PLACES ARE STILL AVAILABLE FOR THIS WEEKEND
Further Techniques in Mosaic.

27-28 June 2009
Course fee: £150
Non-residential
This course is for those who have explored the basics in mosaic, and
wish to extend their knowledge. We look at examples of contemporary
mosaic, and cover working with some of the more professional mosaic
materials, like smalti and marble. Colour, tone, cutting, reflectivity
and some trickier techniques of mosaic are explored, both hands-on and
through examples. We also look at how to approach larger scale projects.
On this course, we encourage students to bring along work for general
discussion.

MOSAIC TABLES FOR HOME OR GARDEN

12–13 September 2009
Students will to produce a small table in the course of a weekend. Some may wish to embark on larger projects. If these are unfinished, no student will leave the course unsure how to complete them. We look at examples of mosaic tables, discussing practical considerations governing the selection of tiles and how mosaic materials can be used to their best advantage. We also discuss design, and learn the preparatory work involved in making a long-lasting table for outside.
INTRODUCTION: THE DIRECT METHOD
26–27 September 2009
£150
The direct method is probably the easiest of all mosaic techniques, although it can be used in highly sophisticated and professional ways. Unlike the indirect method, there is no transformation or reversal of image the mosaic you see as you work is the mosaic you end up.
INTERMEDIATE: DESIGN AND COLOUR IN MOSAIC
24–25 October 2009
£150
This course focuses on how to design for mosaic, and a range of effects that can be achieved by working with colour. Both subjects are immense — far wider than can be taught in a single weekend — but we will study the broad principles. We look at tone and intensity of colour, and hue and surface of materials. We will study both the materials themselves, and some completed work, to see how these principles can be practically applied.
INTRODUCTION: THE INDIRECT METHOD
10–11 October 2009
£150
This technique is the most practical of professional mosaic methods. After sketching out a design, cut tiles are stuck with washable glue onto paper on which the desired image has been drawn. When the mosaic is complete, it is taken to its final location (in this case, a board) and fixed with adhesive. The paper is then removed, and the tiles finally grouted.
