Direct v Indirect

There is a widespread belief, particularly in church circles, that the indirect method is inferior to the direct method, which is the only true and authentic technique for creating great mosaic work. I am not sure where this idea originated, but I think it is the theory of academics, archeologists and others who have never actually had to grapple with the physical process of making a mosaic themselves.

Mosaic Courses


NEW DATES FOR 2008

We have a new course in February run by Emma Biggs.  Introductory; Marble and Smalti. This is a course in which we will be using the traditional mosaic materials.  Marble – the material in which so many marvelous Roman floors were created, and smalti (the intensely coloured hand-made glass traditionally used in churches and cathedrals) are the most sophisticated mosaic materials.

What is Pre-Grouting?

This process is an essential part of the indirect method. Grout is applied with any of the grouting tools to the back of the paper faced mosaic.
