NEW COURSES

Emma Biggs: NORTH LONDON

Students should bring any materials they plan to use as the courses are no longer run at the premises of Mosaic Workshop, but in Emma’s studio.Lunch will be provided on both days.

An introduction to mosaic: The direct and indirect method.

16-17th May 2009
Course fee: £150
Non-residential
There are two ways to make a mosaic. One -- the direct method –- is where mosaic is stuck directly to the finished surface. The other method -- indirect -- involves sticking to paper, taking the mosaic to site, fixing it, and removing the paper. Mesh can also be used, but this becomes part of the structure itself. Each technique has its advantages. This course offers instruction in and explains the virtues of both ways of working. A piece of work should be completed during the course, and if there is not enough time to complete two, both of them will certainly be demonstrated. Students’ understanding will be grounded well enough to ensure familiarity and subsequent use of the techniques.

Design and colour in mosaic

30-31st May 2009
Course fee: £150
Non-residential
This course focuses on how to design for mosaic, and a range of effects that can be achieved by working with colour. Both subjects are immense – far wider than can be taught in a single weekend – but we will study the broad principles. We look at tone and intensity of colour, and hue and surface of materials. We will study both the materials themselves, and some completed work, to see how these principles can be practically applied.
You should not necessarily expect to complete a piece. Instead, you will make small numerous experiments. These should be inspiring and enable you to go away and produce more sophisticated work as a result. The course is suitable for beginners, but those who have a broad understanding of the basics are likely to get most from it.

Mosaic for the garden

6-7 June 2009
Course fee: £150
Non-residential
Emma has recently written another book on mosaics in the garden, and developed various new techniques, so this course should be fun. Beautiful results can be made by working with mosaic, and casting with sand and cement. We will make small paving slabs – using slate, pebbles, and exterior grade mosaic tiles. We will also study techniques for making mosaics onto walls and using panels outside, and decorating pots. We run a specialist table course, so table making is not covered here. If the weather is good, some of this course will take place outside.

Further techniques in mosaic.

27-28 June 2009
Course fee: £150
Non-residential
This course is for those who have explored the basics in mosaic, and wish to extend their knowledge. We look at examples of contemporary mosaic, and cover working with some of the more professional mosaic materials, like smalti and marble. Colour, tone, cutting, reflectivity and some trickier techniques of mosaic are explored, both hands-on and through examples. We also look at how to approach larger scale projects. On this course, we encourage students to bring along work for general discussion.

Emma Biggs: OGUMCE, NORTHERN TURKEY

Mosaic making at the Glass Furnace

Exploring surface, texture and colour.

June 14th -June 20th 2009
500 euros course fee
320 euros accommodation

This is a new course held at the international glass centre The Glass Furnace, in northern Turkey, near the Black Sea. The aim of the class is to teach students to respond to the nature of mosaic materials. Every mosaic material can be used in a number of different ways –for textural qualities and properties of colour, surface, or reflectivity. Wonderful results can be produced from a limited palette by extending the ways the material itself is used. We will be laying tesserae by the direct method. Every student should expect to complete a mosaic panel. In addition, small panels for experimental work will be provided. The course includes a day trip to Istanbul to visit some of the classic Byzantine mosaic sites.
