Introductory Direct and Indirect methods

There are two main ways to make mosaic. One is to stick directly to a surface. This is known as the direct method. The other is to stick to paper or mesh. This is known as the indirect method. Each of these techniques has its own advantages. These courses will teach you the two methods and in which situations they should be used. Students should complete two pieces on the course, one by each method. Their understanding should be well enough grounded to allow them to use these techniques subsequently. A wide variety of materials including glass, marble, and ceramic will be available to students. A limited selection will be provided free of charge but you shoul dexpect to have to buy some materials whilst on the course.

Cost: Special price of £220 for two weekends non-residential.

New Course

6-14th September

Mosaic making at the Glass Furnace, in Turkey

Exploring surface, texture and colour.

This is a new course, at the international glass centre The Glass Furnace, in Turkey, near the Black Sea. The aim of the class is to teach students to respond to the nature of mosaic materials. Every mosaic material can be used in a number of different ways –for textural qualities and properties of colour, surface, or reflectivity. Wonderful results can be produced from a limited palette by extending the ways the material itself is used. We will be laying tesserae by the direct method. Every student should expect to complete a mosaic panel. In addition, small panels for experimental work will be provided. The course includes a day trip to Istanbul to visit some of the classic Byzantine mosaic sites.
