Aston Villa

Mosaic Workshop worked on a very exciting commission for Aston Villa, the Premier League football club based in Birmingham. The club has recently been bought by an American billionaire, Randy Lerner, who is investing huge sums to transform the failing Club into a winning team and a profitable business. As well as hiring a talented new manager, and buying lots of new players he is also trading on the glorious history of Aston Villa.

Not only were they the inventors of the Football League but also the proud owners of one of the largest and grandest stadiums in the country. Unfortunately this was demolished in the 1980’s and replaced with an even larger but very much less grand set of buildings.

One of the main features that was so brutally discarded was a series of huge mosaic signs on the walls of two of the stands, and in an attempt to re-instate some of the club’s former glory, five of these signs are being remade. They will follow as closely as possible the original designs which featured the name Aston Villa along with the club’s crest and some decorative scrolls, all in the traditional colour scheme of claret and blue.

Mosaic Workshop have sourced some beautiful dark red glass from the French manufacturer Opio, which is in a rich range of different shades to add interest to the background areas and can be purched from our shop. The letters and motifs are all in gold, again supplied by Opio. This tile is gold on both sides, making it much easier to use in the reverse method than the usual green backed gold. The panels, which measure over 60m2 altogether, where made up on paper in our old Holloway Workshop, and are now installed in all it's full glory.
