Amanda Wakuraya Kahumbu fell in love with mosaic making after attending a course at the Mosaic Workshop, and has been hooked ever since.
Amanda grew up in Nairobi, Kenya and moved to London in 1984. Her designs are influenced by her Kenyan roots - the vibrant colours and patterns against earthy tones reflect the colours of Kenyan soil against the beautiful contrasting colours of Maasai beaded jewellery and the Kenyan landscape with its sacred Baobab trees. She achieves this vibrancy by combining glass and ceramic tiles in her work.
She lives in Islington, North London with her two children and is a primary school teacher.
Current projects include tables and table tops ranging from 45cm to 105cm in diameter. In addition, she teaches mosaic to Year 5 and 6 pupils at school, runs a Saturday mosaic class for children and their parents at a Family Learning Centre and is currently running an after-school mosaic club.
