Minna Floman started her studies in mosaics in Finland with the French mosaic artist Virginie Lo, before taking a series of courses with Emma Biggs, both at Mosaic Workshop and at West Dean College. Minna Floman's background as a ceramicist and her interest in stained glass work support her creativity in mosaics.
Minna has made a series of mosaic works with ornaments from Iron Age brooches and other artefacts found in Finland; some of these are from the Merovingian period (600-800 A.D.), some from the Viking period (800-1050 A.D.), but most from the Crusades (1050-1300 A.D).. The theme is based on the Finnish cultural heritage and is rich and endlessly varied.
Minna works primarily in marble and ceramics - the traditional materials for mosaics through millennia - though she also uses Venetian smalti and gold to contrast with these rough natural materials.
