Transparent glass has a beautiful glow to it when used correctly and it also creates a sense of depth because you can see through it. However this also means that you can see through to the adhesive below, and the choice of backing material and adhesive will radically alter the visual effect. .
Here is an example of using grey Arduflex and the out come is dull. White Arduflex gives a much brighter result but gluing straight on to MDF with PVA allows the colour of the board to show through which reduces the impact again. Using mirror as the backing material combined with a transparent silicone glue gives the most radiant effect. You can also stick metal foil to your board in the areas where you are using transparent glass and this will create a similar shimmering appearance.

Using Tin Foil
  
Here Emma has used tin foil as a backing to great effect. First the foil was fixed it to the MDF base with PVA, and then the glass tiles were glued to the foil. This technique helps illuminate the transparent mosaic and reinforces the contrast with the unglazed ceramics. |
